‘Kate’ to Begin Filming This Fall in Tokyo

After it was previously announced late last month that Mary would be playing a deadly assassin in a new Netflix film, it’s now been revealed that filming will begin on September 19 in Japan with additional scenes to possibly be shot in Thailand. More plot details have also been released:

Ani, a Yakuza Princess, is a spoiled brat that is deeply connected to the criminal underworld of the Yakuza in Tokyo, Japan. She is both prone to profanity and seems much more mature than her age would suggest. After being poisoned, Kate kidnaps Ani for leverage to infiltrate the Japanese Yakuza and track down her murderer with less than 24 hours to live.

According to HN Entertainment, Netflix is looking to cast young Asian actresses in the lead role of Ani along with how the character factors into the plot opposite Winstead in the Toyko-set action flick.

Below is the casting breakdown for the role of Ani.

LEAD ROLE OF ANI

*FEMALE

*ASIAN, SOUTHEAST ASIAN OR PACIFIC ISLANDER

*SPEAKS BOTH JAPANESE & ENGLISH – FLUENCY NOT REQUIRED

New Casting Updates for Birds of Prey; Spin-offs Rumored

Two new actresses have been added to the long list of the Birds of Prey cast. First up is actress Charlene Amoia. Amoia, who played Wendy the Waitress in CBS’ How I Met Your Mother, will play Maria Bertinelli, the mother of Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s vigilante the Huntress/Helena Bertinelli and the wife of mafia syndicate gangster Franco Bertinelli.

And according to the imdb cast list, Ella Mika will be playing a ‘young Helena Berinelli’ in the film.

Additionally, it is being rumored that if Birds of Prey does well at the box office, we could potentially see a spinoff of Mary’s character the Huntress.

According to sources close to We Got This Covered, Warner Bros. is developing solo movies for Huntress, Black Canary and Cassandra Cain that could be going into production if Birds of Prey proves a big enough hit at the box office. Additionally, it’s said that Rosie Perez’s character Renee Montoya could be getting the same treatment, too, though this possibility is deemed less likely.

This is very exciting news! Can’t wait to see the first trailer for the movie.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will hit theaters on February 7, 2020.

‘All About Nina’ Acquired by The Orchard

Variety has reported that The Orchard has bought North American distribution rights to Eva Vives’ “All About Nina” at the Cannes Film Festival.

The movie, which premiered at Tribeca last month, follows a stand-up comedian (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who ditches an abusive lover ( played by Chace Crawford) and heads to Los Angeles, where she continues her hard-drinking ways and finds a promising new love interest (Common). Beau Bridges and Kate Del Castillo also star.

“After years of living this story, I finally decided to make a film out of it,” said Vives, who made her directorial debut with the project. “I am so excited and proud that a company with a track record and taste as exquisite as The Orchard will help me put it out in the world. Working with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Common was a dream come true. I hope you laugh as much as I did making this film.”

It will be released theatrically later this year.

Congrats to Mary, Eva and the rest of the cast! Can’t wait to see it.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead A Front Runner for Will Smith’s ‘Gemini Man’

I am definitely loving all the newest projects Mary has coming up. With All About Nina completed and The Parts You Lose nearly wrapped, Mary is now vying for the female lead in Ang Lee’s Gemini Man opposite Will Smith.

According to THR, the action film follows Smith in a dual role. One is that of Henry, an aging assassin who wants to get out of the business but finds himself in a battle with the ultimate opponent: his clone, who is 25 years younger and at the peak of his abilities.

Tatiana Maslany is also being considered for the lead and both actresses have read and are testing for the role of Danny, an operative who works for the same company as Henry and is tasked to surveil him. However, she soon teams up with him. Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) is also in the running for the female lead.

A decision for the part will be made soon as the movie is eying a February start with an international shoot that would include locations ranging from Savannah, Georgia to Budapest, Hungary.

Clive Owen is also going to be in the film, playing the head of the cloning program, one of the villains of the movie.

This sounds like a really great movie and I do hope Mary gets the part! We’ll know within two weeks’ time!

Mary Starring in New Film, “All About Nina”

After spending parts of my summer wondering when this was finally getting announced, it happened! Deadline has reported that Mary will be starring in a new semi-autobiographical dark comedy called “All About Nina”, opposite Oscar winner Common.

The story follows Nina Geld (Winstead), a bracingly funny and blisteringly provocative stand-up comedian whose career is taking off, but whose personal life is a near-complete disaster. To escape a difficult ex and to prepare for a prospectively life-changing audition, Nina flees to Los Angeles where she meets Rafe (Common), who challenges almost every preconception she has — including those around her own deeply troubled past.

Beau Bridges, Kate Del Castillo, Chace Crawford, Clea DuVall, Jay Mohr, Melonie Diaz, Camryn Manheim, Mindy Sterling and Angelique Cabral co-star in the film.

Mary filmed this over the summer with director Eva Vives, marking this film as her directorial debut.

They wrapped filming at the end of last month.

The Art of Self Defense to Begin Filming Later this Month

Update: Mary is NOT going to be in the film anymore. She was not announced in the cast list, but is currently filming another project which will hopefully be announced soon.

Well, here’s some exciting news! According to Project Casting, it’s been revealed that Riley’s next film, The Art of Self Defense, will be filming from September 11-October 13 in Louisville, Kentucky with Jesse Eisenberg joining the cast! Additionally, according to Casting 360, Imogen Poots is rumored to be part of the film.

Last year while Mary was still on BrainDead, she had revealed in an interview that the movie was very much in the karate world and that while she played the antagonist in Faults, it’ll be the opposite this time around.

The project between Riley and Mary was first announced in May of 2016.

You can find more info about being an extra in the film by visiting the casting links provided above.

Mary Being Considered for Deadpool 2!

Here we go with the comic book casting rumor mill once again! Collider is reporting that Mary is on a list of actresses being considered to play the part of Domino in Deadpool 2.

Sources close to the production exclusively tell Collider that testing has begun for the character of Domino, and the actresses under consideration include Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond), Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), and Sylvia Hoeks (Overspel). There could be other actresses included in the mix, but sources tell the site that at least these six performers have tested or are going to test for the role.

For those that don’t know, Domino is a mercenary and a mutant, and her powers include the ability to initiate random telekinetic acts that turn probability in her favor. Additionally, she has a close connection to the mutant Cable, as her comics history found her becoming a partner, confidante, and lover of the mutant and frequent frenemy of Deadpool.

Filming for Deadpool 2 will begin early next year. If anything changes, I’ll definitely post the news!

Sky High Sequel Rumored

A sequel to the 2005 film Sky High is reportedly in the works. According to The Hollywood News, the reporter spoke to “Trolls” directors Walt Dohrn and Mike Mitchell and discussed future projects, bringing up the possibility of a second “Sky High” film.

While the two are working on a “Shrek 5”, they had this to say about Sky High 2:

“We’re working on a sequel to Sky High. We’ll see how that goes.”

If you haven’t seen the film, it follows the story of Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano). A freshmen student at Sky High, a school that teaches teens who have superpowers. Will has yet to develop any powers despite being the son of two very famous superheroes, The Commander and Jetstream. So, when he enters Sky High, Will is designated as a ‘Hero Support’ sidekick and uncovers a villainous conspiracy at the school.

Mary, of course, played the villain of Gwen Grayson/Royal Pain and starred alongside Kelly Preston, Danielle Panabaker, Kurt Russell, Lynda Carter and Bruce Campbell.

New 10 Cloverfield Lane Interviews!

A bunch of new 10 Cloverfield Lane interviews have come online now that the film is TWO weeks away (aaahhh!! How exciting!) Below are highlights from Fandango, EW and Empire Magazine that Mary as well as producer JJ Abrams gave. Click on the appropriate links to read all the interviews in full. Additionally, Mary also comments how she’d love to have her own Die Hard film!

Mary on how Cloverfield Lane is connected to 2008’s Cloverfield: “I loved Cloverfield. I love how it sort of flipped the script on the monster movie and made it so personal. In that sense that’s how [both films] are spiritually connected, in that this is another take on a very big idea told in a very small, human, personal way.” [x]

On taking the role of Lucy McClane again:

Winstead didn’t reveal whether Lucy McClane has a role in the new Die Hard movie or not, but says she’s game to get her own Die Hard film.
“Hey, I’ve always wanted to take over the McClane name. I’m more than ready!”

JJ on casting Mary: I was a huge Mary Elizabeth Winstead fan from Scott Pilgrim. She’s got such strength, I really believe her. She’s beautiful but she doesn’t look like someone that you’d never meet in life. The things that Michelle, her character, has to go through in this movie required an actress who could do everything. She needed to be as vulnerable as she is, she needed to be as terrified as she is, she needed to be really calculated, she needed to be spontaneous even through her terror, she needed to be resourceful, she needed to be strong, she needed to be defiant and believable in all these insane obstacles that are thrown at her. She was fantastic. [x]

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How does an original script you acquired get to be a movie under the Cloverfield banner?

This script came in and had an incredibly strong central conceit. It was a very powerful Twilight Zone idea. We began developing the story, and we came upon some things where it became clear to us, that we were in a very interesting place, because the story was wholly original, a very different situation, different characters from anything we’ve done. But the spirit of it, the genre of it, the heart of it, the fear factor, the comedy factor, the weirdness factor — there were so many elements that felt like the DNA of this story were of the same place that Cloverfield was born out of. It just became clear that as we were working on the movie, this could be something that is not the sequel that anyone might expect. It’s not the continuation of the story that people might think of, but it was so clearly associated. There was such a clear Venn diagram of these two things, it felt like if we were literal about connections to the first movie but in no way that people might expect us to be, it could be it’s own thing. We very intentionally didn’t call this movie Cloverfield 2, but we realized that there was enough of a connection, and the movie was good enough that it warranted this association in a way that we think is justified and exciting.
