New Interview of Mary in the Sydney Morning Herald
The Sydney Morning Herald has released a new interview with Mary where they talk about her career including questions about The Thing, Scott Pilgrim, AL:VH, Smashed and doing theatre. You can read the full interview at the link above, but below are some of the questions asked about ALVH and future projects:
You’ve just finished shooting another film, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. What can you tell us about it?
It’s the story of Abraham Lincoln, the historically accurate story of his life from childhood up through the Civil War and the assassination. But it weaves in this completely fictional account of the vampires and this underworld that existed during this time and basically tells the untold story of Abraham Lincoln, that he was not only a presidential candidate and great president, but also a bad-ass vampire hunter and killer.
And you’re also appearing in Smashed, which is getting early awards talk.
I’ve been hearing those kind of things. I of course would never expect those kind of things, because if you expect those kind of things you’re building it up for disappointment. Just the fact that anyone’s even mentioned that it could possibly be part of awards season is incredible in and of itself. And just the wonderful things the critics at Sundance said, even if it ended there I would be so happy. I’m really happy that people responded well to it.
So are you sticking to smaller stuff?
Just for a little while. It feels like the right thing. I want to keep doing that for the time being. There’s a couple of films that I’m about to sign on to, or things are close, that are both very small independent type movies. I think at a certain point I’ll be ready to step back into a big studio film, but right now I’m just having fun sticking to the smaller fare.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Heading to WonderCon 2012
It has been announced that a panel for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter will be heading to WonderCon 2012 in Anaheim, CA. The event takes place March 16-18. Here’s the info that’s been released:
20th Century Fox: Prometheus and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter…in 3D— 20th Century Fox and WonderCon attendees have two big reasons to celebrate the year’s event. You’ll also meet this country’s 16th president and first superhero — Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which explores the secret life of our greatest leader, and the untold story that shaped our nation. The filmmakers will screen special footage, which presents the visionary work of producer Tim Burton and director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted), who bring a fresh and visceral voice to the classic portrayal of the bloodthirsty vampire, while imagining Lincoln as history’s greatest hunter of the undead. Ballroom, Third Level.
No word yet on who’s actually attending (likely director Timur is going). Cast wise I’m not sure, but when more info. is released, I’ll be sure to update you guys. ALVH’s panel will be on St. Patrick’s Day and take place from 1:15-2:15 pm.
Mary Talks Vampires in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter in New E! Interview
In her latest interview with E! news, Mary says that the vampires in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter won’t be anything like the vampires in Twilight…thankfully.
“The vampires aren’t particularly romantic in this one,” Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays Honest Abe’s wife Mary Todd in the flick, told me at the Vanity Fair and Juicy Couture pre-Oscar party. “They’re really just pure evil. I don’t know if we’re romanticizing the vampire as much, but it is exciting.”
“I did a lot of research on Mary Todd before I went into it because I wanted to at least have an awareness of who she was and what she was like, but I was also aware that this was an R-movie version of her,” Winstead said. “I had to kind of let it go and go along for the ride.”
Teaser Trailers for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter!
Check out the teaser trailers for the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter out in 3D on June 22, 2012. Benjamin Walker stars as Abraham Lincoln himself, along with Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper and Alan Tudyk.
The trailer looks sooo good!
And below is the international trailer for the film, where we get our first look at Mary as Mary Todd Lincoln! She looks adorable. You can see the caps of her scene in the gallery. Hopefully some stills of her along with an HD trailer will be released soon.
Personally, I love the international trailer the best. 🙂
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Teaser Footage Described
Fearnet was among the several journalists lucky enough to attend a special Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter event in Springfield, Illinois where they saw the AL:VH teaser trailer & some additional footage. Here are the scenes they saw & have described:
One of the scenes we were shown last night featured Lincoln (played by New York stage actor Benjamin Walker) as a young man, still grieving after his mother has been killed by vampires, honing his skill with an axe under the instruction of his mentor, Henry Sturges (played by Dominic Cooper). Walking through a sunlit forest, Sturges instructs Lincoln to think of the things he hates most in life, and tells him to focus his aggression on a tree. Growing more enraged with each swing of his axe, Lincoln’s anger culminates in an explosive blow that takes down the entire tree in a slow-mo, CGI-enhanced money shot, chunks of wood hurtling at the screen. (This shot is featured in the trailer, and will doubtlessly prove even more effective in 3D). Sturges then tells Lincoln to do the same to every other tree in the woods.
Another scene showed Lincoln targeting a local shopkeeper who’s secretly a vampire, and a mano-a-mano fight ensuing in his tiny store. It’s a fight that quickly ends, with Lincoln falling through a trap door into a basement/dungeon, where he’s immediately ensnared by his legs and strung upside down alongside several other men.
A quieter scene was one in which the young Lincoln is courting his wife to be, Mary Todd (as played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead), by a lake, as the two enjoy a picnic in the park. Here Honest Abe reveals to Mary his nighttime activities, and exactly how many vampires he’s killed. She’s amused, but unconvinced, though she plays along with what she believes is a joke.

First Look at Some ALVH Trailer Footage plus Cost of Living Info
So by now, we know that the teaser trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter will be out on Monday, but in the meantime, CBS did an interview with Benjamin Walker, Mary’s co-star in the upcoming film who plays Abe himself. In the interview, we get to see him check out some of Abraham Lincoln’s real-life artifacts and how much of his life remains a mystery. We also get several snippets of the upcoming trailer & it looks insane! See for yourself in the video below:
Also, BenDavid Grabinski, who directed Cost of Living which stars Brandon Routh and Bret Harrison, did an interview with Bloody-Disgusting & talked about how Mary’s part of “The computer voice” came to be:
Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays the voice of this computer that seems to be taunting the heroes at times. Did she get involved before or after Bret and Brandon?
Mary’s husband Riley is a good friend of mine. I wrote the computer voice for her. It’s a ‘HAL’ type character that’s sort of mixed with the female villain from “Portal 2”. Without her, you can’t really have a lot of story economy. It would be hard to whittle the whole thing down to just 9 minutes. She was the first person I had. I had a location and a crew but no cast aside from her. Seven days out I didn’t have Bret or Brandon yet. Mary suggested Brandon, and it had never occurred to me in my wildest dreams I could get him. But I love Brandon and I thought he hadn’t been used in a way that exploited his full potential comedically. He’s really funny in Scott Pilgrim, but that’s not as the hero. I thought he would be really funny as a John Carpenter/Kurt Russell hero. The character in my head was always a cross between Snake Plissken and Jack Burton. She sent the script to Brandon, we went and talked for hours over sushi and he said “so when are we shooting?”
Cost of Living will be premiering online on Valentine’s Day so check back in a few days to see it in full!
