The Spectacular Now Heads to France

THR reports today that The Exchange has sold all French distribution rights for coming-of-age film The Spectacular Now to Eurozoom.

“We are delighted and honored to work on the French release of The Spectacular Now, a wonderful and sensible movie that begins like a typical teen romcom only to catch us by surprise and evolve into this brilliant and heartfelt growing up experience. We are confident that not only French young moviegoers but also a more mature audience will relate to the exceptional acting performance of Shailene and Miles and to the expertise and grace of director James Ponsoldt,” said Lacombe.

Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller star in the film, which had its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where the actors received the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting. Also starring Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kyle Chandler and Andre Royo, The Spectacular Now, from 21 Laps Entertainment, was released in the U.S. by A24 on Aug. 2, 2013. The film about a hard partying teenage boy who meets an unusual “nice girl” has done a solid $5.7 million domestically.

Director James Ponsoldt on why Mary is his Muse

Vanity Fair caught up with The Spectacular Now director James Ponsoldt after the film’s premiere in Los Angeles, and spoke with the magazine about casting for his new film and why Mary was his muse in Smashed:

VF Daily: How much of a say did you have in casting the film?

James Ponsoldt: Huge say. All the people were the people that I wanted. I wouldn’t make a movie with actors I didn’t love. It was collaboration—we work with casting directors, we work with the producers. But no, these were all people that I adore and have wanted to work with. Shailene since The Descendants, Miles I had seen in Rabbit Hole and Footloose. Brie [Larson] since Rampart and 21 Jump Street. Dayo [Okeniyi] was a discovery. He’s amazing.

And Mary Elizabeth Winstead?

Yes! The star of my last movie.

Is she your muse?

[Laughs] She certainly was for Smashed. She and her husband are an aesthetic ideal of romance personified, and in that regard romance is alive. They’re a muse to my antiquated notions of romance.

First Release Dates for The Spectacular Now; Wolf Lake to Stream Online

Come August 2, James Ponsoldt’s latest film The Spectacular Now will hit theaters in a limited run. The official site has been updated with the first release dates for the film in places such as New York, California, Texas and New Jersey. Click HERE to find out if Spectacular Now will be playing in a theater near you and be sure to check back often as more release dates will be announced within weeks.

And in other Mary related news, CBS is putting all of the episodes for “Jericho,” “Swingtown” and “Wolf Lake” up on CBS.com for the summer, allowing viewers to experience a trio of dramas they didn’t necessarily flock to when they were actually airing.

“Wolf Lake,” focusing on the lycanthropic happenings in a Seattle suburb, aired on five episodes on CBS and then jumped to UPN for four additional low-rated airings. In addition to Winstead and Wesley (still named “Paul Wasilewski” at the time), the series featured Lou Diamond Phillips, Tim Matheson, Graham Greene and Sharon Lawrence.

The Spectacular Now trailer has finally hit the Internet and it is. SO. GOOD!! Coming to theaters on August 2, the story follows the romance between charming, popular, happy-go-lucky teenage alcoholic Sutter (Miles Teller) and shy, wise, pretty-but-doesn’t-know-it Aimee (Woodley, naturally), whom he meets after passing out on her lawn. Mary stars in the film, as well as Brie Larson and Kyle Chandler. View the trailer below!

I also capped Mary’s quick appearance from the trailer and you can see it in the gallery.

The Spectacular Now Makes Complex Magazine’s 25 Most Anticipated Indie Movies of 2013

James Ponsoldt’s The Spectacular Now has landed at #2 in Complex Magazine‘s 25 Most Anticipated Indie Movies of Summer 2013. Their mini-review is as follows:

At first glance, The Spectacular Now seems like your typical coming-of-age flick: a booze-guzzling and uninspired high school senior meets a sweet girl who makes him change his ways. But the film adaptation of the popular Tim Tharp young adult novel isn’t as predictable as it seems. Anchored by affecting performances from Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley, winners of Sundance’s U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting, The Spectacular Now is a moving and thoughtful glimpse into the inherently complicated life of a kid struggling to resolve his inner demons, and the girl who helps him face them. Much like The Breakfast Club and Say Anything, count on the movie to be a staple in the movie collections of teens everywhere.

Out August 2, TSN will also star Miles Tellar, Shailene Woodley and Brie Larson.
