First Photos of Mary in ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ Remake

After muuuuch anticipation, People has finally released the first photos of Mary in director Michelle Garza Cervera’s The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Though the movie is a remake of the 1992 film, which starred Annabella Sciorra and Matt McCoy as the couple and Rebecca De Mornay as the nanny, this update is no carbon copy, promises director Michelle Garza Cervera, who teases plenty of “shocking moments.”

The film will release on Hulu October 22nd & you can view all the photos of Mary Elizabeth as her character Caitlin in the gallery.

“The studio gave me all the chances to recreate the whole thing and build a new story, new characters, with its own heart. I think that was the best way to honor the original, not try to redo it,” she says. “We build a whole different kind of thriller. It’s actually more of a slow burn.”

Garza Cervera also says the film will take place in Los Angeles instead of Seattle like the original film did and give the characters “more complex backstories”. “Instead of having just a victim and a perpetrator, they’re both in gray areas,” she says of Polly and Caitlin. “I love the kind of antagonists that you can, on a point, empathize with. So there’s a very interesting game, like yin and yang that happens between them.”

Garza Cervera says Monroe, a scream queen known for horror films like It Follows and Longlegs, was the perfect person to play Polly: “She brings a very evil, contained tone to the film that I’m super proud of.” Winstead, also no stranger to thrillers thanks to her turns in Final Destination 3 and 10 Cloverfield Lane, “is the kind of actress that can completely transform for a role,” adds Garza Cervera.

The filmmaker says the two leads share a chemistry that gives their characters a multilayered dynamic: “It’s very interesting to see, because in a moment you even feel like they could be attracted to each other.”

Mary Spotted on ‘The Hand that Rocks the Cradle’ Set

Mary was seen filming her latest film ‘The Hand that Rocks the Cradle’ in Los Angeles yesterday and I’ve added the behind the scenes photos into the gallery. The film is a remake of the 1992 movie by the same name. Mary will play Claire Bartel in the upcoming thriller.

The original film starred Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra and follows a woman, played by De Mornay, who after her sex-offender husband gets caught in the act and kills himself, embarks on a mission of vengeance against one of her husband’s victims and the woman’s family. Maika Monroe will step into the role made famous by De Mornay, while Winstead will play the role originated by Sciorra.

Mary Attends Special Screening of Baby Girl Plus New Filming Update

It’s a great day to get your fix of the latest Mary news! First up, over the weekend, Mary and Ewan attended a special screening of A24’s newest film Babygirl which stars Nicole Kidman. They were there to support Ewan’s daughter Esther McGregor who also has a role in the film as Kidman’s daughter. In the new photos, you can clearly see that Mary has dyed her hair blonde for her upcoming film The Hand that Rocks the Cradle! You can check out the new pics in the gallery.

And speaking of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, it was reported earlier today that Smile 2‘s Raúl Castillo has joined the film in a supporting role as the architect husband of Winstead’s character, portrayed in the original 1992 film by Annabella Sciorra. Claire Bartel is happily married and pregnant for the second time when she becomes the target of a dark plot on the part of a nanny — originally portrayed by Rebecca De Mornay, and now by Monroe. Directed by Curtis Hanson, the original watches as Peyton infiltrates the lives of the Bartel family after experiencing personal and professional ruin, slowly gaining their trust while manipulating them from within. Her ultimate goal? To destroy Claire and assume her place within her family.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead “In Talks” For ‘Hand that Rocks the Cradle’ Reboot

As the headline states, Mary is currently in talks to join It Follows and Longlegs actress Maika Monroe in a remake of the 1992 thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle for 20th Century Fox.

According to Deadline, Michelle Garza Cervera will direct the pic, with Micah Bloomberg penning the script.
In the original film directed by Curtis Hanson, the ’92 film starred Rebecca de Mornay as a pregnant woman who is married to a sex offender; her husband eventually gets caught and kills himself after other victims come forward. This leads de Mornay’s character having a miscarriage, and she looks to exact revenge against one of her husband’s assault victims (Annabella Sciorra) and her family, leading to a bloody conflict between the two women. While the plot points for the new film remain hidden, the casting will see Winstead portray the part of the assault victim while Monroe will take over as the sex offender’s widow.

Mary was last seen opposite her husband Ewan McGregor in the Paramount+ series ‘A Gentleman in Moscow‘ and starring in Disney+’s Ahsoka series opposite Rosario Dawson.

What do you guys think of the news? I’m personally excited Mary is getting back into the horror/thriller genre! If you’re also curious, you can view the trailer for the original film below:
