Canada Picks Its Top Films from TIFF; 8-Film Quentin Tarantino Blu-ray Collection Announced!

With TIFF officially over, Canada.com has picked its top picks from the festival, and SMASHED is among the list. Here’s what they had to say:

Too often, films about addiction veer into heavy melodrama or turn into sensational shockfests. Here’s a look at alcoholism that’s grounded by a moving naturalism, even as its flawed heroine spirals through after-work benders that go from hilarious to sad to frightening. Mary Elizabeth Winstead delivers a career-making performance as a young schoolteacher who realizes she’s lost control of her drinking. The stellar supporting cast includes “Breaking Bad”‘s Aaron Paul as her enabling husband, “Parks and Recreation”‘s Nick Offerman as her sympathetic co-worker and Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer as her AA sponsor.

Also, Lionsgate and Miramax have announced the Tarantino XX: 8-Film Collection, coming to Blu-ray on November 20th. On the Death Proof disc, we’ll see an uncut version of Mary singing “Baby It’s You”. Here’s the details:

DEATH PROOF
Kurt Russell stars as a tough-talking, psychotic serial murderer who transforms his stunt car into an indestructible killing machine, then climbs behind the wheel to stalk and terrorize a group of women on the road. What he doesn’t realize is that he’s picked the wrong babes to mess with.

Blu-ray Special Features*
* Stunts on Wheels: The Legendary Drivers of Death Proof
* Introducing Zoe Bell
* Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike
* The Uncut Version of Baby, It’s You performed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead
* The Guys of Death Proof
* Quentin’s Greatest Collaborator: Editor Sally Menke
* Double Dare Trailer
* Death Proof International Trailer
* An International Poster Gallery
* BD Live

You can read the full list of special features for the box set at the link provided above, including the artwork. And just for fun, here’s the video of her singing said song:

Mary Says She Wasn’t Expecting Another Die Hard Film; New TIFF Video Interview

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has insisted she did not expect another Die Hard film.

The Smashed star is reprising her role as John McClane’s daughter Lucy in Bruce Willis’ fifth movie about the disaster-saving cop.

She said: “It’s a very brief appearance but it was really fun to reprise the father-daughter rapport.” She continued by saying:

“I keep thinking it’s got to be the last one, I thought the last one was gonna be the last one. So who knows… as long as Bruce is still up for it, I’m sure they’ll keep making them.”

Also, THR has posted a new online interview with Mary and her Smashed director James Ponsoldt.

More New Mary Interviews from the Smashed TIFF Premiere; Aaron Paul Talks Working with Mary

A couple of more video interviews with Mary from yesterday’s TIFF premiere for Smashed have been released online, and I’ve posted them below. Also, in another new interview, Aaron Paul talked about working with Mary on the film and their on-screen chemistry.

There’s also one more interview here and here.

CS: Did you spend some time with Mary Elizabeth beforehand to build the relationship?
Paul:
Yeah, yeah, before they officially offered it to me, they set up a meeting with Mary and I and we met at this restaurant slash bar and just kinda talked and felt each other out and we hit it off. You know, I’m such a huge fan of hers and I couldn’t wait for a project like this to kinda come her way because I thought she really deserved it. I always knew that she was super-talented, but she just needed the right project to be able to kinda spread her wings and this is just that and she’s brilliant.

CS: I’ve been a big fan of hers a long time and I’ve met her a few times, and I remember seeing her work in “The Thing” and how much she put into the role, but unfortunately movies are a director’s medium and I don’t think some of the more dramatic work she was doing made the movie.
Paul:
Yeah, I mean, what’s going to hit the cutting room floor and make the film, but it was so great because she just really stayed in character pretty much the entire time, which must’ve been so exhausting for her. Then, that was exhausting for me.
