First Look at Mary in Netflix’s KATE; Release Date Soon

Entertainment Weekly has given us our first look at Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the upcoming Netflix action film, KATE. Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan and also co-starring Woody Harrelson, theplot for KATE is as follows:

After she’s irreversibly poisoned, a ruthless criminal operative has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies and in the process forms an unexpected bond with the daughter of one of her past victims.

Head to the gallery to see the first look photos of Mary as the assassin. She looks SO good, so bad ass. Can’t wait! The film will be released in September. The specific date is currently unknown, but a trailer will also be out soon!

Mary spoke to EW and gave a little bit more details about the plot:

“Kate is a ruthless assassin who is on a job in Tokyo, and she gets poisoned,” Winstead tells EW. “She finds out she has 24 hours to live before the poison kills her, so she sets out on a mission to find out who poisoned her and kill them before she dies. Along the way, she forges this bond with this teenage girl named Ani (Miku Martineau), and they end up taking on this mission together. It’s a heartfelt, brutal, assassin story!”

The director also spoke to EW about filming one of the tougher action sequences which involved Mary and another Japanese actor/musician:

“The hardest one to shoot was the one with Mary and Miyavi inside the apartment,” says the filmmaker. “We couldn’t shoot that with stunt doubles, so they had to do it themselves. You had two actors that are doing very, very close-contact stunt work. We thought something bad could happen there. This one was definitely making me nervous.”

‘Scott Pilgrim’ Re-Release Reminder and New ‘KATE’ Update

A couple of updates in regards to projects Mary has done and will be out soon: First up, as previously mentioned back in March, Scott Pilgrim VS the World will be re-released into AMC theaters in celebration of the film’s 10th anniversary last August. It was delayed (obviously) due to the ongoing pandemic. Be sure to get your tickets using the link HERE.

In other news, we got a small update on Mary’s upcoming Netflix action film ‘KATE’ via Collider. According to producer Kelly McCormick, she says the streaming service still plans to release the film later this year and it is still being worked on to be completed. You can see her give the update in the video interview below at the 9 minute mark:

New ‘Birds of Prey’ Banners; BoP Spin-offs Possible

Apologies for the lack of updates everyone! Been busy, but I’ll try to update the site more often. First of all, Mary is currently in Japan filming her new action film KATE for Netflix. Aside from wrapping up in early December, I have no new info on the project…for the time being. Now onto the good stuff!

WB has recently released two new banners promoting Birds of Prey and they have been uploaded to the gallery. Remember, next month, Mary along with the rest of the cast will be attending CCXP in Brazil so a new trailer is likely to drop then so stay tuned!

In related news, Variety is reporting that should the upcoming Batman film with Robert Pattinson prove to be successful, key cast members from Birds of Prey and The Batman have contract options to appear in sequels and standalone films. Additionally, DC’s Joker had an ‘R’ rating and in the case of “Birds of Prey,” the film won’t be in the pitch-black, grim vein of “Joker.” Insiders describe the film has a more humorous, spirited, girl gang adventure, albeit not one for younger children. A series of recent reshoots dramatically improved test screening results and the studio is confident “Birds of Prey” will be a hit when it opens in February.

A fall shoot is expected to begin in Asia later this year with rumored locations being in Japan and Thailand.

Back in May, it was reported that Netflix was looking for an Asian actress to take on the role of Ani, a Yakuza Princess who is a spoiled brat that is deeply connected to the criminal underworld of the Yakuza in Tokyo, Japan. After being poisoned, Kate kidnaps Ani for leverage to infiltrate the Japanese Yakuza and track down her murderer.

‘Kate’ to Begin Filming This Fall in Tokyo

After it was previously announced late last month that Mary would be playing a deadly assassin in a new Netflix film, it’s now been revealed that filming will begin on September 19 in Japan with additional scenes to possibly be shot in Thailand. More plot details have also been released:

Ani, a Yakuza Princess, is a spoiled brat that is deeply connected to the criminal underworld of the Yakuza in Tokyo, Japan. After being poisoned, Kate kidnaps Ani for leverage to infiltrate the Japanese Yakuza and track down her murderer with less than 24 hours to live.

According to HN Entertainment, Netflix is looking to cast young Asian actresses in the lead role of Ani along with how the character factors into the plot opposite Winstead in the Toyko-set action flick.

Below is the casting breakdown for the role of Ani.

LEAD ROLE OF ANI
