Ewan McGregor Joins ‘Birds of Prey’, R Rating Confirmed

In further casting news for Birds of Prey, it has been announced that Mary’s Fargo co-star Ewan McGregor has joined the DC film as the villain Black Mask. He will join Margot Robbie who is reprising her role of Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad along with Jurnee Smollett-Bell who is playing Black Canary. Rosie Perez is playing Renee Montoya.

Black Mask is a Gotham City mob boss aka Roman Sionis who leads the False Face Society gang. In the comics, he killed his wealthy parents in order to take control of their corporation, but he was a terrible businessman and lost everything. He blames others for his shortcomings with Bruce Wayne being one of his targets.

In a recent interview this past week, director Cathy Yan confirmed that Birds of Prey will be rated R. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on February 7, 2020.

Nice to see that Nikki Swango and Ray Stussy will be reunited again! šŸ˜›

Mary Says Working With Will Smith in New Film Was ‘Wonderful’

Mary recently gave an interview to The Wrap while promoting her new film All About Nina and said that working with Will Smith on their new film Gemini Man was a real treat. The film, directed by Ang Lee, follows Winstead opposite Smith as an operative tasked with surveilling Smithā€™s character. The film follows an aging assassin (Smith) facing off against his own clone 25 years his junior, at the peak of his abilities.

ā€œWe started in February, so it was a long project, but it was really amazing,ā€ Winstead said of filming. ā€œItā€™s this big action movie, but with a heart. You know with Ang Lee directing youā€™re going to have some thoughtfulness behind it. Really it was a wonderful thing to be a part of. One of the reasons the movie is finally being made is that the technology is at a place where itā€™s possible to make it and to make it well,ā€ Winstead said. ā€œThe technology is really kind of experimental in a lot of ways. I think Ang is really pushing the boundaries of filmmaking and the visuals and the experience of watching a movie. Itā€™s hard for me to describe because Iā€™m not the most tech savvy, but I think youā€™re going to be experiencing a completely new way of watching a movie and Iā€™m really really excited to see the final film,ā€ she added.

The film was a six month shoot and Mary says during that time, being around Will was amazing:

ā€œHe truly is just the most wonderful, wonderful person,ā€ Winstead said. ā€œHe was just this shinning light. Heā€™s just so lovely and warm and so respectful ā€” just like thankful to be there, you know. You donā€™t really find that in people in his positionā€¦ it was a really amazing thing to witness.ā€

Gemini Man will hit theaters on October 4, 2019.
