Kickstart A New Musical Short Film Starring Mary!

A Kickstarter campaign has launched to help fund a musical short film featuring Mary that will be written and directed by Mary’s good friend, Justin Carlton. Studio Apartment is a fresh take on the musical, exploring what it means to create alone and together. The short stars actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ryan Kattner (Honus Honus) of the band Man Man.

The plot summary is as follows:

Samantha (Winstead) is a young songwriter trying to record in her apartment. Frustrated by the interruption of her sister and her own sense of self, Samantha decides to take a walk. On her walk she meets a stranger sleeping in a bush who can’t remember the name of a song stuck in his head. Samantha remembers the song, it’s one of her father’s favorites. She and the Stranger slip into a musical, singing “Jackie Wilson Said” by Van Morrison. Reminded of her love of music, Samantha returns home, ready to create.

You can check out a video for the project below:

Any money that you donate to help reach the goal of $15,000 will go towards choreography, rehearsals, equipment, paying and feeding the crew AND not to mention bringing the film straight to a screen near you!

Head to the Kickstarter page to check out a snippet of the song Mary will sing for the film and donate some money to help this project come to life! Be sure to check out the goodies that come along with your donation…and hurry! You’ll have until October 11 to help out!

Mary Cast in CBS’ BrainDead

Mary Elizabeth Winstead will star in “BrainDead,” a new comic-thriller set in the world of Washington, D.C. politics, to be broadcast in summer 2016. The series comes from Robert and Michelle King, creators and executive producers of “The Good Wife.”

Winstead will portray Laurel, the daughter of a Democratic political dynasty who left Washington, D.C. to become a documentary filmmaker, but is pulled back into the family business when her brother, the senate majority whip, needs her help running his senate office. Now a young, fresh-faced Hill staffer, Laurel discovers two things: The government has stopped working, and alien spawn have come to Earth and eaten the brains of a growing number of congressmen and Hill staffers.

“We’ve been fans of Mary going back to ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,’ but it was really her extraordinary work in ‘Smashed’ and ‘Alex of Venice’ that had us imagining Laurel’s lines coming out of her mouth,” said Robert and Michelle King. “She’s fantastic at mixing comedy and drama, and keeping it all vulnerable, yet real. We can’t wait to see what she does with Laurel.”

This is such exciting news! Not only will Mary have a show airing in the summer next year, we’ll also be seeing her this winter on PBS’ Mercy Street! Double the MEW goodness!

First Look at Mercy Street and Teaser!

The Washington Post has posted a great behind the scenes video giving us a first look at PBS’ new Civil War medical drama, Mercy Street.

Programming executive Beth Hoppe says the cast of “Mercy Street,” including “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor, who plays pioneering surgeon Jedediah Foster, “The Wire” veteran Peter Gerety as a fellow doctor, and “Scott Pilgrim Versus The World” star Mary Elizabeth Winstead as nurse Mary Phinney, embraced research for their parts, including watching their way through Ken Burns’ nine-part documentary “The Civil War.”

Check out the behind the scenes footage and interview below:

New admin + Got a Girl outtakes

Hi all – I’m Paige and I’m a new admin, thanks to the lovely Jessica for adding me! I’ve been a huge fan of MEW’s for years and years so I’m thrilled to be a part of this great website. I haven’t arrived empty-handed, either:

LA Canvas posted an article about Got a Girl, calling them “ones to watch” and bestowed upon us several new photo shoot outtakes. Check them out in the gallery:

“It started out as just an interesting experiment,” says Winstead. And then we realized, ‘Hey, what we’re doing is really good.’ We’d recorded a dozen songs, each one coming from a different place, but there was a unifying vibe to all of them…. All of a sudden, it felt like we were doing an album.”
