Anthony Gordon: How did you end up working with Mary?
Dan: In 2008, Radiohead was playing the Outside Lands festival here in San Francisco and [Radiohead guitarist] Ed [O’Brien] called me up to have dinner with him and Nigel Godrich and a bunch of other people. We were hanging out and these guys I hadn’t met before, Edgar Wright and Bryan Lee O’Malley, and Edgar asked me to do some music for a film they were making called Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and I was like “Yes! Of course!” Mary, who was starring in the movie, was at the dinner as well. She told me she was a fan and wanted to do some music together. We stayed in touch and a year or two later we were like “you know what? We should just try something and see what happens.” It ended up being cool and we had good chemistry together so we kept making songs and just took it from there.
AG: How did you two go about making this record? What’s your songwriting process like?
Dan: I make the music, and sometimes I’d send her tracks here and there, but mostly we’d sit together in the studio and she’d come up with melodies and we’d work out lyrics together.
AG: What are your plans for touring with the record now?
Dan: We just did two shows on the West Coast, then we have a few more coming up in New York and LA. I’m feeling pretty good about it. The band is well rehearsed and the shows have been going well. Right now we’re just dipping our feet into the water to show people we can play live.

Pret-A-Porter Interviews Mary During NYFW
The Hollywood Reporter’s Pret-a-porter caught up with Mary during Jenny Packham’s New York fashion show earlier this week and asked her how she felt about attending NYFW:
“It’s been so much fun. When I first got here, I think it took me a little getting used to the chaotic energy of the whole thing because I’m so used to laid back L.A. so I was kind of thrown into that,” Winstead told Pret-a-Reporter before sitting front row with Arrow‘s Katie Cassidy and Shameless‘ Emma Greenwell at Packham’s show. “It took me a day or so to adjust. Once I got with the wavelength, it’s been really great and exciting and fun and totally different than anything I’ve experienced,” added the first-time frow-er, who also attended the Zimmermann, Pamella Roland and Monique Lhuillier shows. “It’s so different than any event in L.A. It’s very specific to New York and feels like a very special thing to be a part of.”
She was also asked who she was rooting for on Sunday’s Emmys:
“My best friend, Amanda Crew, on Silicon Valley [nominated for best comedy series] — I’m so excited for her show. I’ve seen what she’s wearing, which I won’t spoil what it is. And I don’t know her very well but she’s sort of a friend of a friend, and I feel like I know her, but I’m rooting for [Orphan Black actress] Tatiana Maslany [nominated for lead actress in a drama series] as well.”

Kickstart A New Musical Short Film Starring Mary!
A Kickstarter campaign has launched to help fund a musical short film featuring Mary that will be written and directed by Mary’s good friend, Justin Carlton. Studio Apartment is a fresh take on the musical, exploring what it means to create alone and together. The short stars actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ryan Kattner (Honus Honus) of the band Man Man.
The plot summary is as follows:
Samantha (Winstead) is a young songwriter trying to record in her apartment. Frustrated by the interruption of her sister and her own sense of self, Samantha decides to take a walk. On her walk she meets a stranger sleeping in a bush who can’t remember the name of a song stuck in his head. Samantha remembers the song, it’s one of her father’s favorites. She and the Stranger slip into a musical, singing “Jackie Wilson Said” by Van Morrison. Reminded of her love of music, Samantha returns home, ready to create.
You can check out a video for the project below:
Any money that you donate to help reach the goal of $15,000 will go towards choreography, rehearsals, equipment, paying and feeding the crew AND not to mention bringing the film straight to a screen near you!
Head to the Kickstarter page to check out a snippet of the song Mary will sing for the film and donate some money to help this project come to life! Be sure to check out the goodies that come along with your donation…and hurry! You’ll have until October 11 to help out!
