New Smashed Reviews

A couple of new Smashed reviews have been posted online, praising Mary’s performance in the film. The first review is from the St. Louis Post Dispatch:

There will never be another Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor, but Hollywood may have found a new Lee Remick in Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Like Remick, Winstead could pass for a cheerleader (as she was outfitted in Quentin Tarantino’s half of “Grindhouse”). But behind the pretty face is a brave actress, and “Smashed” is her answer to “The Days of Wine and Roses.”

Winstead plays Kate, an elementary school teacher who lives in a hipster enclave of Los Angeles with husband Charlie (Aaron Paul of “Breaking Bad,” who may be the new Ben Foster). The Sundance-approved script by writer-director James Ponsoldt doesn’t waste time charting their downward spiral or its causes — by the time we meet them, Kate and Charlie are already falling down drunk.

While Kate’s embrace of AA (where the confessors include Octavia Spencer) is a bit too quick, Winstead strikes a believably ambivalent note about whether her youthful exuberance is a bad thing.

The JCOnline also loved Mary’s performance in the film:

The performance of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a young alcoholic battling to get and remain sober elevates “Smashed” from clichéd underpinnings.Winstead’s vulnerability, turmoil and pain as she faces the challenges of beginning a new life without the crutch of booze are heartbreaking as well as courageous.

Hollywood has had a long history of movies about drunks from “A Star Is Born” to “The Lost Weekend,” from “I’ll Cry Tomorrow” to “Days of Wine and Roses.”

And many cover the same areas: the denial, the loneliness, the inner turmoil and self-loathing. “Smashed” displays many of these familiar themes as well.

Yet Winstead’s performance overcomes the familiarity as we watch her downward spiral and her climb to redemption.

A.C.O.D. Heads to Sundance!!

Awesome news! TWO of Mary’s films will be at January’s Sundance Film Festival. Just last week, we found out that The Spectacular Now would be heading to the fest and now it’s been unveiled that Stuart Zicherman’s ACOD (Adult Children of Divorce) will be on it’s way over there. Here’s part of the announcement:

The announcement of the Premieres and Documentary Premieres slates completes Sundance’s feature lineup, which in the final tally will present a total of 115 pics, 101 of which are world premieres.

Eighteen films will bow in Premieres, up from the usual 14 or 15, suggesting an unusually strong field for potential buyers. The section is typically reserved for the festival’s starriest names.

PREMIERES
The 18 world premieres in this section are from the U.S. unless otherwise noted.
“A.C.O.D.” — Directed by Stuart Zicherman, written by Ben Karlin and Zicherman. A seemingly well-adjusted adult child of divorce makes a discovery that wreaks havoc on his family. Stars Adam Scott, Richard Jenkins, Catherine O’Hara, Amy Poehler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Clark Duke.

Congrats to Mary once again!! 🙂

The Sundance Film Festival runs Jan. 17-27 in Park City, Utah.

Mary in Total Film Magazine!

Mary looks stunning in the newest issue of Total Film magazine where she talks about her new film Smashed due out December 14th in the UK. When asked if she knew taking on the role of Kate and the film was going to be a good career move for her, Mary admits: “I didn’t think of it so much as a great career move, but I knew it was what I needed to do. I was just feeling really scared of not becoming a better actor and of getting stuck.”

Quentin Tarantino Says Death Proof is the “worst film” He’s Ever Made

In a new interview with Yahoo!, director Quentin Tarantino has admitted that the worst film he has made is his Grindhouse film Death Proof.

The 2007 film starred Kurt Russell as a malevolent stuntman who stalks a group of women, and murders them with his muscle-car. Though intended to be a homage to the exploitation b-movies of the 70s, it was the first failure for Tarantino at the box office.

“Death Proof has got to be the worst movie I ever made. And for a left-handed movie, that wasn’t so bad, all right? So if that’s the worst I ever get, I’m good. But I do think one of those out-of-touch, old, limp, flaccid-d*** movies costs you three good movies as far as your rating is concerned.”

Though many critics reviewed it positively, others found its graphic violence ‘juvenile’.

At the time, Tarantino was more charitable, saying: “It was disappointing, yeah. But the movie worked with the audience. People who saw it loved it and applauded. I’m proud of my flop.”

Ah well. Win some, lose some.

The Guardian Interviews Mary on Smashed

Just like the headline reads, The Guardian sat down and interviewed Mary about her film Smashed. Below are some highlights from the interview. Be sure to read the FULL interview by clicking on the link above:

“I really didn’t have any fear about the humiliation factor,” she says. “That was something I was excited to get the opportunity to explore. My fears were about pulling it off.” Her extensive research included attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for several months. “I came into it very quietly: I didn’t say I was an actor. If they asked me to speak, I’d tell them I had come to learn about AA. I never pretended to be anything I wasn’t. But I also didn’t want to stand up and say: ‘Hey guys – I’m making a movieee! Anyone wanna tell me their story?'”

Her empathy for the character is unwavering, whether she’s rallying herself unconvincingly for her pupils or staggering down the street after waking up on a discarded mattress. One particular scene stands out: Kate’s breakdown after being refused alcohol in a convenience store. The scene ends with her sobbing as she urinates on the floor. “Most of the work in that scene is done before you get on set,” she explains. “It was all to do with Kate reverting to a point in her childhood when she wanted something really badly but couldn’t have it. As a little kid, you’ll try everything. You go from cute to cross, you start throwing things and then you burst out crying. She’s reaching back to that.”

Also, I’ve added a new pic of her from the interview into the gallery.
