First Review For Got A Girl’s Debut Album

The Digital Fix has reviewed Mary’s debut album and it’s received a great review! Below are some highlights:

First thing’s first, you don’t have to have an equal love (or even knowledge) of French pop to enjoy Got A Girl. From the seductive lead single ‘Did We Live Too Fast’ – “I’m sure she’s very lovely, but aren’t I just as nice?” – through to the delicate finale of ‘Heavenly’, the entire album captivates. A mid-album combo of the energetic sharp hook of ‘There’s A Revolution’ and the dramatic strings of ‘Things Will Never Be The Same’ is among the most invigorating sequences of music we’ve listened to this year.

As to be expected, Nakamura’s production is crisp but few might expect the vocal range and strength of Winstead. Magnetic and confident in various styles throughout, Winstead even gets the chance to bring out her mischievous punk rocker on ‘Da Da Da’, while she could be soundtracking her own romantic drama with ‘I’ll Never Hold You Back’ – “As the cold sets in / I hear your voice from within / And now you’re everywhere I turn”.

All in all, I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now is not only one of the year’s strongest debuts, but also one of its most surprising delights. Quite how much more we’ll see of Got A Girl remains to be seen but, based on this auspicious effort, we’ll follow them wherever they go

Final score– 8/10

Faults to Premiere at Australia Film Festival

Aside from premiering at the FrightFest this August, FAULTS will also be premiering at Possible Worlds Australia’s Festival of American and Canadian Cinema on August 16th. It will take place at 6:30 PM at the Event Cinemas George St. You can buy tickets for the screening here.

If you can’t remember, here’s the plot for FAULTS:

Claire (Winstead) is under the grip of a mysterious cult known as Faults. Claire’s desperate parents set out to recruit mind control expert Ansel Roth (Leland Orser) to abduct and deprogram her. Washed out, in debt and in trouble, Ansel agrees. But Claire reveals herself to be a formidable challenge. As it cunningly evolves from black comedy to psychological thriller, Faults remains utterly compelling thanks to a clever script (on the 2013 Black List of unproduced screenplays) and brilliant chemistry between rising star Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs The World) and character actor Leland Orser (Se7en, Taken).

New Got A Girl Interview

Hunger TV interviewed Mary about her debut album I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now which will be released on July 22. Check out some highlights from the interview below and click on the link to read the full interview. I also added a higher quality pic of Mary and Dan which you can see in the gallery:

YOU AND DAN THE AUTOMATOR MET ON THE SET OF  SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD – WHAT DREW YOU TO SPARK UP CONVERSATION?

I had been a fan of Dan’s for several years, so I was a bit intimidated. I was completely obsessed with Lovage and had been a follower of all his projects. We were at a group dinner, and didn’t say anything until we were all leaving, at which point I walked up and told him I was a big fan, and whisked myself away. We didn’t see each other again until a year later at the film’s premiere. That’s when Dan approached me about potentially working together, which I was certainly not expecting.

YOUR ALBUM TITLE, I LOVE YOU BUT I MUST DRIVE OFF THIS CLIFF NOW, IS PROBABLY THE BEST ALBUM TITLE I’VE HEARD IN A LONG TIME – WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

Thank you! It started as a joke between Dan and I. We were writing a song and laughing about how melancholy the lyrics were, and sort of making fun of ourselves. So that became a joke about the album and that just stuck. And I’m glad, I love it.

YOU SEEM TO HAVE MOVED SEAMLESSLY FROM AN ACTING TO SINGING CAREER – WAS THERE EVER A POINT WITH DAN THE AUTOMATOR WHEN YOU FELT THE IMMENSE PRESSURE OF HIS PRIOR MUSICAL SUCCESS AS YOU WERE JUST STARTING OUT?

The way we made this album was so low pressure, so low key. We never really had a plan of how we were going to release it or if we were even going to release it! I always trusted that Dan would only keep going if he felt the music was good, and that really calmed any fears I had previously about how I would be perceived. If we like it, that’s what matters. And hopefully other people will as well.

ON YOUR WEBSITE YOU SEEM TO BE GEARING UP TO LAUNCH A RANGE OF WINE, PERFUME, BUBBLE BATH AND EVEN OLIVE OIL. ARE YOU LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO RECREATE THEIR OWN GOT A GIRL LIFESTYLE?

Yes! Dan and I see this project as a bit of a meeting of the minds between the two of us. Bringing all of our likes and interests together. So we’ve worked with some really interesting people to create some small batch, hand made products. We’re sort of holding up this lifestyle but also taking the piss out of it.  It’s sort of ridiculous for us to have our own olive oil, but that’s what’s fun about it.

New Got A Girl Interview

The Digital Fix caught up with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Dan the Automator, the duo that make up Got A Girl, where they talked a little of how the group came together:

“It was really serendipitous. Dan was looking to do something that was inspired by yé-yé girls, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, all of that – which, at the time, I was thoroughly engrossed with myself. So it was quite perfect.”

“It was a meeting of the minds. A kindred spirit kind of thing,” added Nakamura.

The album will be out July 22nd. Additionally, live UK dates will be announced soon!
