New Reviews for Smashed

With SMASHED being screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this week, a couple of sites have released their reviews about Mary, as well as the film itself in general. Here’s what ComingSoon.net had to say about the film:

We’re big fans of Mary Elizabeth Winstead and her underrated ability to deliver deadpan lines in a funny way and handle more dramatic material, and this feels like the role that gives her the chance to really fly. Kate is the definition of an obnoxious drunk and Winstead’s portrayal of someone that out of control gets grating at times. We know that it’s wrong to laugh but it’s also hard not to since Kate’s out of control is funny at times… or maybe we’re just laughing at the awkardness of the situations. That’s actually one of the things about “Smashed” that’s intriguing in the barometer it creates in what the audience will find funny.

The Film Stage can’t wait for the film to be released into theaters after writing the following:

Delivering my favorite performance of Sundance was Mary Elizabeth Winstead, with her heartbreaking turn as an alcoholic in Smashed. While there are some conveniences in the story’s structure, they do not detract from this powerful showing from a promising up-and-comer. A single scene where Winstead smiles, talking about her addiction, then sinks into sorrow just moments later epitomizes the talent on display here.

Also, Yahoo named Mary one of the fresh faces of 2012 because of her role in SMASHED: Continue reading New Reviews for Smashed

New Updates on A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan

EW did an interview with A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III director Roman Coppola where they revealed that the film will be out sometime in February 2013. Coppola also revealed a little bit about Mary’s role in the film:

Aubrey Plaza and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are also in the film. How do these women shape the things going on in his head?
Aubrey Plaza is the producer of his design studio. She’s trying to keep him on the ball in terms of keeping him focused and applying his energy to getting his work done. His business is foundering a bit. And Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays the best friend of his girlfriend who just broke up with him. She is not so supportive of their relationship.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

Set in a stylized Los Angeles, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III is a daring, playful comedy of lost love, friendship, revenge fantasies, and Brandy Alexanders. Charles (Charlie Sheen) is a successful graphic designer whose fame, money andcharm have provided him with a seemingly perfect life. When his true love, a perplexing beauty named Ivana, suddenly breaks off their relationship, Charles’ life falls apart and he swirls into a downward spiral of doubt, confusion and reflection. With the support of his loyal intimates— Kirby (Jason Schwartzman), Saul (Bill Murray), and his sister, Izzy (Patricia Arquette) — he begins the hard road of self-evaluation to come to terms with a life without Ivana. The film begs the question: Is it possible to love and hate someone at the same time?

Mary Featured in The Lab Magazine!

With Smashed coming out this fall, The Lab magazine has done an interview with Mary with the questions being done by her Smashed co-star Nick Offerman. Below are some of the questions Nick asked Mary, and you can read the full interview here. Be sure to check out the lovely pics of Mary in the gallery. Love their interview! So charming and funny.

Have you been in a less comfortable scene than our driveway scene in Smashed

MEW—I can’t help but think you were more uncomfortable than me. I watched as you slowly died inside and I felt the utmost embarrassment for you. In a good way!

If you were forced to tell me a name-droppy story that your usual humility would normally prohibit, what would it be?

MEW—I once had dinner with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening and he told me stories about Natalie Wood, Madonna, and Edie Sedgwick. I just dropped that on you so hard.

NO—I tried Twitter for a few weeks then promptly quit because I think it has a pernicious influence upon us. How do you feel about the social network Kool-Aid?

MEW—I come very close to deleting my Twitter account on an almost daily basis, but it keeps reeling me in. I’m quite terrified of my own reliance on technology/social media and admired your decisive move away from it. I am simply too weak!

NO—Which of your co-stars did you find more charming: me or Donny Osmond?

MEW—The only real memory I have of Donny Osmond is that we threw him a party at which we all wore purple socks. Apparently he likes his socks in a particular hue. And he has a dazzling smile, but no facial hair. I think we all know who wins this battle.

Deltron 3030 Talks Mary On New Album

As we know by now, Deltron 3030 is set to come out with a new album Deltron 3030: Event II later this fall and Mary has collaborated with the group on a couple of songs. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the group, and Mary, discuss how it came together:

“I’m a huge, huge fan,” says actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who flew from a film premiere in Korea to join Deltron 3030 for its performance at Rock the Bells in San Bernardino earlier this month. After befriending Dan the Automator during filming for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Winstead was invited to the producer’s San Francisco studio in January to sing on a track called “Look Across the Sky.”

“I never really expected it to end up on the album,” she says. “It shows the kind of crossover appeal that it has, that it sparks something in me as someone who doesn’t even really listen to that kind of music, necessarily.”

The album will be released sometime in October.
