Entertainment Weekly Celebrates the 10 Year Anniversary of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

August 13, 2010 marks the 10 year anniversary of ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs the World‘. Directed by Edgar Wright, the movie is based on graphic novels of the same name by Bryan Lee O’Malley. To help celebrate the upcoming 10 year anniversary of the film, the cast, O’Malley and Wright spoke with Entertainment Weekly and reminisced on the film and whether or not we’ll get a sequel. Below are highlights of Mary from the interview, but you can read the entire Q&A with the cast by clicking the above link.

Mary on training for the film:

WINSTEAD: They got us together in Toronto before we started shooting. It was all of us in this giant warehouse. One of us would be doing martial arts in the corner, and somebody else would be weight-lifting in another corner, and then Michael and Alison and [Mark Webber, who played Sex Bob-omb guitarist Stephen Stills] would be doing band stuff at the same time. It was really fun.

The cast and crew on whether a sequel will happen:

CERA: I don’t think a sequel is a reality. [Laughs] In my limited understanding of the film industry, when a movie doesn’t really explode at the box office, it’s hard for anybody to get behind a sequel.

O’MALLEY: I would like to revisit the characters [in comic form] and see what they’re up to. I sketched Scott early in the pandemic with a huge beard. I think that would be a funny image.

WRIGHT: There’s some plans — and there’s nothing official yet — but there are some plans to revisit the material in an animation way. We’ve been talking with Bryan and with Jared for a while [about]: What if we did something with the books in anime form? It’s being discussed as we speak.

EVANS: The Marvel fan base is rabid, but the Scott Pilgrim fandom is just as dedicated and loyal as any fandom I’ve ever seen.

WINSTEAD: There’s something about Scott Pilgrim that’s not like anything else, and a lot of people are looking for that. They feel they’re not like anybody else or they feel their tastes don’t really line up with what is being made right now. You see that movie and you think, Oh God, this speaks to me; this is what I’ve been looking for!

SCHWARTZMAN: There’s still an email chain that started 10 years ago. The entire cast is on it. To this day, everyone still “replies all” to a lot of emails.

WRIGHT: I’m incredibly proud of the movie. The fact that you’re not doing a 10th-anniversary article about The Expendables says it all.

And in case you missed it, it was previously announced by Edgar Wright that the film will be back in theaters

New ‘Birds of Prey’ Photo Shoots and Interviews

There are two brand new photo shoots I have added into the gallery that Mary did to promote her new film Birds of Prey. The first one is from Entertainment Weekly’s Around the Table, where a film cast get together and discuss their movie over a meal. You can see that photo by clicking the thumbnail below and viewing the entire video interview below:

Secondly, Mary has a new photo shoot with WhoWhatWear. Some of the photos are below and some highlights from the interview. Be sure to click the link above to read it in full:

Do you remember when you got the call to come in for this project? What was your initial reaction?

It piqued my interest because it was so female-led. Margot Robbie, the fact that she was starring in it, because I really respect her as an actress, but also the fact that she was producing, I thought was really interesting. I went and watched Cathy Yan’s first film, which I loved, so I really wanted to meet her and talk to her about it. I was really curious about Birds of Prey from the get-go, more so than I think other films in this genre, because I think I thought, Oh, you sort of know what to expect, whereas this was something new to me. I was excited to meet all these women who are strong and interesting and unique.

What was your fitness regimen preparing for this role?

You know, thankfully they didn’t put us on any particular fitness regimen other than training for the roles, which was what do you need to know in order to play this character? What do you need to be able to do? Sometimes I was on my own, sometimes I was with the other girls, but we just had a big warehouse and trained with the stunt team for several months, did a lot of jujitsu, various kinds of martial arts, a lot of drills that would sort of slowly build into choreography over time, so it was really fun. I really loved it. I love working with stunt people because I find them to be just incredible people and so supportive and sweet, and their work ethic is incredible, and obviously their talent is unimaginable. I always find it really inspiring just to be around stunt people. I feel really lucky to get the opportunity to do that.

THR Interviews Mary; More Birds of Prey Interviews

THR caught up with Mary to discuss Birds of Prey and her upcoming action film Kate (hitting Netflix later this year), and I’ve highlighted some of the Q&A’s below. Be sure to click the link above to read it in full:

In Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, he made the point that Bruce Wayne is Batman’s mask, figuratively speaking. With that in mind, how would you differentiate Huntress from Helena? Is Huntress her true face, a la Batman?

I think she creates Huntress from Helena. She creates Huntress from the pain that Helena has experienced in her youth. Huntress is the face she can put on to put that pain into action and turn that pain into something good in her eyes. She gets to be an avenger, she gets to have purpose and she gets to be more than just this scared little girl that she was when her family was killed in front of her. I think that’s what the character or persona of Huntress represents to her.

Physically speaking, is this the hardest job you’ve ever had?

It was up until that point. Since then, I’ve moved on and done a much more action-heavy movie [Kate] after Birds of Prey, which was great. But Birds of Prey was definitely a big, huge leap in that direction for me to really train hard with a stunt team and go beyond what I’ve done before in terms of fight training and physicality. I really loved it.

Given the women-led creative team, did you and your castmates have greater camaraderie?

Absolutely. We talked about it a lot. I remember speaking with Jurnee about how she and I have both been in the business since we were kids — well over 20 years now — and how this is the first time this has happened for either of us, which is shocking, strange and not right. But, at the same time, it’s made this experience so special, and it was such a bonding experience for all of us to go through this film together, to be in the trenches together, to be working hard together, to be putting out work that we’re proud of and to have it be our own. It feels great to not be standing behind a bunch of men, but to actually be standing in front of it as women with something that we made, something that we’re proud of and something that we put our blood, sweat and tears into.

Lots more video interviews with Mary promoting Birds of Prey with the cast have also been uploaded and you can view them after the cut.

Latest Birds of Prey Interviews with Mary

More interviews featuring the cast of Birds of Prey are coming online each day and today, a couple more interviews have been released. Speaking to Variety, Mary discussed her time working on the soap opera Passions, how it felt to work on a set with women both in front of and behind the camera and what drew her to take on the role of Huntress. They also released a new still of Mary as her character and you can view the HQ image in the gallery. Glamour UK’s interview with them is also listed below. Additionally, you can see an interview Mary did with the rest of the cast here.

What did you know about Huntress before you signed on?

I had a vague awareness of her. Once I heard about the project and I started researching her, I found her to be a really interesting, mysterious kind of character. Then I met with Cathy and Margot. And I became more and more interested in the world that they were building — of all these really quite intriguing women.

What are some ways you feel like you’ve been treated differently as a woman in this industry?

I think it’s just the feeling that there’s an expectation that you’ll always be quiet about everything. That you’ll always be quiet about any sort of mistreatment that’s come that comes your way. There’s an expectation that the women — particularly the young women, or the women who aren’t so famous — would never speak up about it. Because our places within the industry are too fragile for us to risk that. And that expectation is changing.

How old were you when you were on “Passions”?

I was 14 years old. It was my first time coming to Los Angeles, and I ended up on the crazy soap opera. So that’s how that happened.

Were you aware of how utterly batshit it was as you were filming it?

I had no idea. As I was filming it, I certainly became more aware as the days were going on, and as the scripts were coming in. But when I signed on to it, I had no idea what I was doing. They didn’t give a scripts or anything. It was just like, “Oh, there’s a new soap opera. It’s gonna have lots of teenagers and young people. It’s going to air in the summer.” We all just went, “Great. Sounds awesome!” And it was. I mean, it was great.
